Zendesk vs Freshdesk (2026): Same $19 Seat, Different Bill
Shayan, Founder15 min read

Freshdesk costs less than Zendesk: about half on seats with chat, and 30% to 40% of it once the AI is on. Both sell an email-only seat for $19 a month on annual billing. Chat is where they part. A chat widget needs Zendesk Suite Team at $55 or Freshdesk Omni Growth at $29. Zendesk's AI agent charges $2 per resolution past a handful included; Freshdesk's Freddy sells sessions in $49 packs of 100. A two-agent team handling 500 conversations a month with chat pays $70 on Freshdesk and $138 on Zendesk if people answer everything, and $168 against $418 once the AI handles 30% of it. Zendesk wins on depth: voice built into the seat, scheduled help-center publishing, six levels of help-center hierarchy, an AI agent that answers on voice, and a Marketplace with named apps for Jira, Linear, GitHub and the feedback tools. Freshdesk's catch is the renewal letter: its seat prices rose 13% to 27% and its AI unit price five times between January 2024 and January 2026. Neither has a free plan that lasts; Freshdesk's two free agents expire after six months. We make UserJot, where the inbox, the AI agent and the feedback board come at one flat price, and the same three teams are costed on it at the end.
Seats
Both price per full agent, and both sell email ticketing for $19. The step to chat is $36 a seat on Zendesk and $10 on Freshdesk.
| Zendesk | Freshdesk | |
|---|---|---|
| Cheapest seat with live chat | Suite Team, $55 annual, $69 monthly | Omni Growth, $29 annual, $35 monthly |
| Cheapest seat of any kind | Support Team, $19 annual, $25 monthly, email only | Growth, $19 annual, $23 monthly, email only |
| Middle plan | Suite Professional, $115 annual, $149 monthly | Pro, $55 annual, $66 monthly; Omni Pro $79 annual, $95 monthly |
| Top plan | Suite Enterprise, quote | Enterprise, $89 annual, $107 monthly; Omni Enterprise $119 annual, $143 monthly |
| Read-only seats on the cheapest plan | None included on Team, with an add-on whose price is not published; 100 light agents on Suite Professional | None on Growth; 5,000 collaborators from Pro |
| Free plan | No; 14-day trial of Suite Professional | Two agents for six months; 14-day Enterprise trial |
Zendesk's Suite is one product: chat, a help center, voice and the omnichannel routing come together at $55, and you cannot buy the chat alone. Freshdesk's chat is a different SKU, Freshdesk Omni, which is the same help desk with chat, messaging channels and telephony connections folded in at $10 to $30 more per agent than the plain tier. Both trials run on a higher plan than most teams buy: Zendesk's on Suite Professional with Copilot on, Freshdesk's on Enterprise. Freshdesk's day passes give an occasional agent a full seat for $2 to $12 a day.
Freshdesk's free offer is a program, not a plan: two agents, six months, then a paid tier or suspension. It used to be ten agents with no time limit, cut to two in late 2024 and to six months in 2025. On both tools the product manager who wants to follow tickets is a full seat on the cheapest plan; Freshdesk adds 5,000 view-and-comment collaborators at Pro, and Zendesk adds 100 light agents at Suite Professional.
The AI meter
Both charge for the AI agent on top of seats. Zendesk bills outcomes; Freshdesk bills attempts.
| Zendesk AI agent | Freshdesk Freddy AI Agent | |
|---|---|---|
| Unit | Resolution | Session |
| Price | $2 pay-as-you-go, $1.50 on a committed volume | $49 per pack of 100, so $0.49 a session |
| Included | 5 per agent per month on Team plans, 10 on Suite Professional | 500 sessions once, on new paid accounts |
| What counts | Older model: an automated resolution by inactivity rules. May 2026 model: a verified resolution, where a model checks the request was solved | Every AI reply within 72 hours of a customer's first email, or within 24 hours of a chat; a session that ends in a handoff counts; setup previews count; a chat greeting nobody answers counts |
| Human handoff | Not billed | Billed, as a session |
| Spend cap | Yes on the older model: pauses the AI at the limit; not documented for the May 2026 model | No dollar cap documented; a daily cap on emails handled; packs recur each cycle unless you reduce them, and an optional auto-recharge buys another when the balance drops under 50 |
| Agent assist for humans | Copilot, $50 per agent per month annual; Suite Professional includes five uses per agent a month | Copilot, $29 annual or $35 monthly per chosen agent, from Pro |
| Languages | 80-plus advertised | Replies in the customer's language if you have enabled it |
Zendesk's unit is a resolution, and from May 18, 2026 its new model has a second model judge whether the customer's problem was solved before billing, with rates it has not published; the pricing page still prints the per-agent allowance and the $2 rate. The Zendesk pricing post has the detail. Freshdesk's unit is a session, which is a window of time rather than an outcome: an unsuccessful attempt the customer reopens inside 72 hours is one session, a customer who writes back on day four starts another, and a human handoff still uses one. Packs round up, and Freshdesk's own documentation disagrees with itself about whether an auto-recharge pack is 50 sessions or 100. The Freshdesk pricing post walks through it.
A Freshdesk session is a quarter of a Zendesk resolution in price and less than a resolution in what it delivers. The bills below treat one session as one handled conversation, which is a floor.
Three bills
Monthly billing, every agent a full seat, no Copilot, no voice usage, no startup credit. The first table is people answering everything, on the email-only seats and then on the seats with chat.
| Team | Zendesk Support Team | Freshdesk Growth | Zendesk Suite Team | Freshdesk Omni Growth |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 agents, 500 conversations | $50 | $46 | $138 | $70 |
| 5 agents, 2,000 conversations | $125 | $115 | $345 | $175 |
| 10 agents, 5,000 conversations | $250 | $230 | $690 | $350 |
On annual billing, Support Team and Growth are both $38, $95 and $190; Suite Team is $110, $275 and $550 and Omni Growth $58, $145 and $290.
"With AI" means the agent handles 30% of conversations and people take the rest, on the seats with chat. Zendesk's included resolutions are counted; Freddy's one-time 500 sessions are assumed used up, and the packs round up to the next 100.
| Team | Zendesk Suite Team with AI at 30% | Freshdesk Omni Growth with Freddy at 30% |
|---|---|---|
| 2 agents, 500 conversations | $418 | $168 |
| 5 agents, 2,000 conversations | $1,495 | $469 |
| 10 agents, 5,000 conversations | $3,590 | $1,085 |
On plain Growth without chat, the Freshdesk rows are $144, $409 and $965.
Zendesk is about twice Freshdesk on seats with chat at every size, and 2.5 to 3.3 times once the AI is on. The gap widens with volume because Zendesk's $2 resolution is four times Freshdesk's $0.49 session and the allowances are small: two agents on Suite Team get ten free resolutions against 150 the AI would handle. At ten agents, the AI is $2,900 of Zendesk's $3,590 and $735 of Freshdesk's $1,085.
The shape is the same on both. The seat is the entry fee and the meter is the revenue, and the meter grows with your customers rather than your team. Freshdesk's is the cheaper meter and the looser unit: it bills the attempt, not the outcome, so the 30% column is a floor rather than an estimate. Zendesk's is the dearer meter with the stricter definition, and the definition is in the middle of a change.
Live chat, email and an AI agent, one flat price.
UserJot's support inbox and Juno come with every plan. No agent seats, no resolution meter, no session packs.
Where each one is stronger
Both are ticketing systems with a help center, automations and an AI agent. The differences are at the top of Zendesk's range and at the bottom of Freshdesk's.
Zendesk, for the help desk. Skills-based routing, SLA policies with breach alerts, collision detection, custom reports and up to five help centers start at Suite Professional, and Enterprise adds sandboxes, custom roles and scheduled publishing. Collision detection is not on the Team plans. Voice is a built-in channel on Suite with metered minutes. The help-center editor takes Markdown shortcuts, tables, code and callouts, with six levels of hierarchy on Enterprise. The Marketplace lists Jira, Linear, GitHub, Asana, Trello, ClickUp, Notion, Confluence, HubSpot, Salesforce, Pipedrive, Stripe, Shopify, Zapier and Make, plus Canny, Productboard and UserVoice for feedback. Data residency in Ireland, Germany, the UK, Japan or Australia is free from Suite Professional. The AI agent advertises 80-plus languages, and the Forethought agent is a separate add-on since June 2026.
Freshdesk, for the price. Growth at $19 includes a default SLA policy, collision detection, automations, dispatch rules, webhooks and the help center, and removes Freshdesk branding from the customer portal; SAML is on every paid tier. Pro adds round robin, custom reports, multiple SLA policies, up to five products with their own portals, 5,000 collaborators and community forums. Freddy reads Google Drive, SharePoint and Confluence as well as your articles, runs API actions, and understands images since September 2026. The first-party Jira app is Freshworks-built, Canny and Productboard integrate, and Freshdesk advertises 1,000-plus integrations. A Capterra reviewer in September 2026 reports switching from Zendesk Suite for affordability, and an unverified November 2024 Reddit thread describes a move to Freshdesk for lower cost and easier administration.
Feedback, two plans up on both. Zendesk's Gather is a native community forum with voting and post statuses, on Suite Professional at $115 a seat. Freshdesk's Ideas forum has voting and the statuses planned, in progress, deferred and implemented, on Pro at $55. Neither documents a roadmap page or a changelog product, and on the plans in the tables above the feature request a customer makes in a support chat ends as a ticket. That gap is the product UserJot was built from.
Ownership. Zendesk has been privately owned by a Hellman & Friedman and Permira group since November 22, 2022, in a deal of about $10.2 billion, and bought Forethought in 2026. Freshdesk is a product of Freshworks, which trades on Nasdaq, is headquartered in San Mateo, was founded in Chennai in 2010, and reported $237.4 million of revenue for the second quarter of 2026. One is private and one reports quarterly; both have changed how they bill in the last two years.
Reviews. Zendesk's G2 page has 7,099 reviews at 4.3 and 179 tags for learning curve; Capterra has 4,094 at 4.4. A Capterra reviewer in December 2025 wrote that "licensing and add-ons are costly," and a Reddit poster in August 2026, unverified, described "running out of Automated Resolutions at an alarming rate" after a volume increase. Freshdesk's Capterra page has 3,489 reviews at 4.5 and TrustRadius 656 ratings and reviews at 8.5. TrustRadius reviews from August 2026 call it "clean, intuitive, and easy to use" and the integrations "clunky." A Capterra reviewer in August 2026 described a 24-month commitment to 19 seats while using four, and a Reddit poster in September 2026, unverified, gave a 35% renewal increase as the reason for leaving. Renewal-price complaints recur in two Freshdesk threads; AI-billing complaints recur in three Zendesk threads.
Fine print that differs
- Refunds. Neither refunds a cancelled annual plan. Zendesk's charges are non-refundable and non-cancellable, so a 12-month contract is owed in full. Freshdesk has no cancellation fee, but cancellation takes effect at the end of the term, so the same contract is owed in full.
- Renewal notice. Both auto-renew for the same term and seat count unless they receive written notice at least 30 days before the end. Both need 30 days' notice to reduce seats at renewal, and Zendesk rules out mid-term reduction. Freshdesk can raise fees at renewal on 30 days' notice, which is how the 35% increase above arrived.
- Data after cancelling. Zendesk gives 30 days of export access and starts deletion at 90 days. Freshdesk deletes 14 days after the subscription ends, and producing an export can take up to ten business days. Start the Freshdesk export before you cancel, not after.
- Startup programs. Zendesk for Startups is six months free for up to 50 agents, with eligibility rules that differ between Zendesk's own pages, after which everything you turned on bills at list price unless you cancel first. Freshdesk publishes no startup program; its free offer is the two-agent, six-month program, and its old startup and nonprofit pages return errors.
- Price changes. Freshdesk's annual seats went from $15, $49 and $79 to $19, $55 and $89 between January 2024 and January 2026, and a Freddy session went from ten cents to forty-nine. Older Freshdesk contracts can still carry monthly session allowances of 2,000 to 5,000. Zendesk's resolution model changed in May 2026 and its Growth plan left the pricing page.
Which one to pick
Pick Zendesk when support is a department: SLAs with breach alerts, phone queues, skills-based routing, several brands, data residency, and an admin whose job is the help desk. Budget for the AI at $2 a resolution and ask which billing model your account is on before you sign.
Pick Freshdesk when you want a ticketing system at the lowest seat price and will keep it simple: Growth for email, Omni Growth for chat, Pro if you want forums and custom reports. Put the renewal date and the 30-day notice in a calendar, treat Freddy's packs as a floor, and read the renewal letter when it comes.
Pick UserJot when support and product feedback are the same conversation, which for a SaaS product they are. Your customers write to you from inside the app and over email, and the question after "how do I" is usually "could you add". If you are choosing between Zendesk and Freshdesk because you want chat in your app and an AI that answers from your docs, that is the product UserJot is, with the feedback board built in rather than two plans up, at a price that rounds to zero next to either bill above.
The same three teams on UserJot
UserJot runs your public feedback board, roadmap and changelog, and the same product carries your support. Live chat on your site and support email land in one inbox. Juno, our AI agent, answers from your docs and the sites you point her at, searches the feedback board before she replies, writes in the customer's language, and hands the thread to a person the moment a question needs one. When a customer asks for something that does not exist yet, she finds the matching request or drafts a new one, and files it with their vote once they confirm. Zendesk's agent and Freddy close the ticket; Juno closes the loop. A feature request that arrives in a support chat gets filed, voted on and announced from the same place, and the customer who asked hears about it when it ships. Everyone on the team can work the inbox, because there are no agent seats.
The price is flat: $0, $29 or $59 a month for the whole workspace, with no agent seats, no resolution meter and no session packs. We priced it that way on purpose. A support tool should not earn more when your customers need more help. The third row is the one to read: a team that grows from two agents to ten and from 500 conversations to 5,000 pays $29 at ten agents where it paid $0 at two, and on the other two that growth costs $3,172 and $917 a month more.
| Team | Zendesk Suite Team with AI at 30% | Freshdesk Omni Growth with Freddy at 30% | UserJot |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 agents, 500 conversations | $418 | $168 | $0 |
| 5 agents, 2,000 conversations | $1,495 | $469 | $29 |
| 10 agents, 5,000 conversations | $3,590 | $1,085 | $29 |
Free covers three teammates, and it does not expire. Starter at $29 covers up to 100 and adds a custom domain, private boards, guest posting and the API. Pro at $59 adds single sign-on, identity masking and white-labelling. Conversations is in beta and free on every plan while it is, and beta workspaces hear before anything changes.
UserJot is a support inbox with a feedback board, not a ticketing system. It has no phone or SMS channel, no SLA policies, no skills routing, no canned replies and no app marketplace. If your support runs on phone queues and SLA dashboards, you are not our customer, and one of the two tools above is the right answer. If it runs on a chat widget, a support address and a docs site, you are, and you can be live this afternoon.
Questions people ask
Is Freshdesk cheaper than Zendesk?
Yes. The email-only seats cost the same $19 a month on annual billing, but chat is $29 on Freshdesk Omni Growth against $55 on Zendesk Suite Team, and Freshdesk's AI sessions are $0.49 each in packs of 100 against Zendesk's $2 per resolution. For a ten-agent team with chat and the AI handling 30% of 5,000 conversations, Freshdesk is about $1,085 a month and Zendesk about $3,590.
Which has the better AI agent?
Neither has been independently tested; they differ in sources, surfaces and billing. Zendesk's answers on messaging, email and voice, advertises 80-plus languages, and from May 2026 is moving to billing only resolutions a second model has verified. Freddy reads Google Drive, SharePoint and Confluence, runs API actions, understands images, and answers on email, the Omni chat widget, WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger. Zendesk's billing unit is stricter and dearer; Freshdesk's is looser and cheaper, and a handoff to a person still costs a session.
Does either have a free plan?
Zendesk has none; its trial is 14 days of Suite Professional. Freshdesk's Free Program gives two agents six months with one support email, basic tickets and a knowledge base, after which you pick a paid tier or the account is suspended. The cheapest ongoing option on either is a $19 email-only seat on annual billing.
What is the difference between Freshdesk and Freshdesk Omni?
Freshdesk is email ticketing with a help center. Omni is the same help desk with live chat, messaging channels such as WhatsApp and Instagram, and telephony connections folded in, at $10 to $30 more per agent. A SaaS team that wants a chat widget needs Omni or the separately sold Freshchat.
Can I move from Zendesk to Freshdesk, or the other way?
Yes, in both directions, with no self-serve importer documented on either side. Freshdesk's migration hub promises tickets, contacts and knowledge base migration, with dedicated engineers for larger teams; a self-serve Zendesk importer is not documented. Zendesk's route from Freshdesk is its API, a CSV importer for users, or a migration partner such as Relokia, which names Freshdesk as a source. Export before cancelling either: Zendesk's export window is 30 days and Freshdesk deletes 14 days after the subscription ends.
Which is better for a small SaaS team?
We make UserJot, so weigh this accordingly: for a SaaS team whose support happens in the app and over email, UserJot puts the inbox, the AI agent and the feedback board in one product at a flat $0 to $59 a month, with no per-user seats, no resolution meter and no session packs, and it is the only one of the three with the board built in on every plan rather than two plans up. Of the other two, Freshdesk: a real help desk with chat at $29 a seat, as long as you read the renewal clause.
Is there a free alternative to Zendesk and Freshdesk?
UserJot's Free plan includes live chat, a support email inbox and Juno for up to three teammates, next to a public feedback board, roadmap and changelog, and it does not expire. Freshdesk's two free agents expire after six months; Zendesk's six free months for startups end at list price.
